Afrobeats Wedding Party Playlist

🕒 Reading Time: 4 minutes

Music was always going to play a big part in our wedding day, but we wanted it to reflect both sides of our Welsh-Nigerian celebration.

Our ceremony and drinks reception featured acoustic music, but we knew the evening party would be the perfect opportunity to bring more Nigerian influences into the celebration.

Before our first dance, we were lucky enough to have a live performance from Cardiff-based Nigerian artist Morack Official.

His set included a mix of original songs alongside familiar covers, with everyone from Ed Sheeran and Chris Brown to Selena Gomez getting the Afrobeats treatment. It was such a fun way to introduce the genre to guests who might not have heard much Afrobeats before, while still giving them songs they recognised.

His performance also led nicely into our first dance, which was a Nigerian song, before the evening party got underway.

To help shape the evening, my husband put together a list of Afrobeats songs he loved and shared it with our DJ, Obsession Entertainment, before the wedding.

Afrobeats isn’t our DJ’s specialist genre, something he was very open and honest about from the start. While he recognised some of the more recent crossover hits, we knew a playlist would help him get a better feel for the artists, songs and style of music we wanted to include.

It wasn’t intended to be a strict running order or a list of songs that had to be played. Instead, it acted as a guide and gave him a starting point when planning the evening entertainment.

Although this was an Afrobeats playlist, the evening music wasn’t exclusively Afrobeats. We wanted the dance floor to feel welcoming for everyone, so our DJ mixed these songs alongside plenty of other party favourites throughout the night.

One of the things I loved most about working with an experienced DJ was being able to trust him to read the room. We shared the music we loved, and he used it to create a brilliant mix that kept both sides of the wedding on the dancefloor.

If you’re planning a Nigerian wedding, a multicultural wedding or simply looking for Afrobeats inspiration for your evening party, these are the songs we shared with our DJ before the big day.

More Wedding Music Inspiration

This playlist helped shape the evening party at our Welsh-Nigerian wedding, but it was only one part of the soundtrack for our day.
