If you’ve ever wanted to make a Yule log look magical, this guide is for you! I’ll show you how to create a Candy Land inspired Yule log that’s fun for kids and perfect for gifting, plus ideas for other creative themes to keep your Christmas baking fresh every year.

We did this as part of our Christmas Family Fun Day, which was packed with games, crafts, and cosy fun. Decorating the Yule log was only a small part of that day, so if you want more ideas for keeping little ones busy, make sure you check out the full post.
Now, let’s get to the chocolatey fun!
Step 1: Shape Your Log
Start with a chocolate sponge roll. If you’ve baked one, amazing! If not, a shop bought one works just as well.

Cut it into a log shape. I made one long trunk with a little branch sticking out to look like a real woodland log. This tiny detail makes it extra special and gives you more space for decorations.

Step 2: Melt the Chocolate
This is the grown up job! Melt your chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. (I always burn mine in the microwave, so the hob is safer.) I debated melting white chocolate and colouring it pink for my Christmas Candy Land theme, but I stuck with the traditional woodland log.

Make sure your bowl and spoon are completely dry because water makes chocolate seize and turn grainy.
Once melted, let it cool for a minute so it’s easy to spread. Kids can help stir once it’s off the heat.

✨ Corrina’s Chocolate Tip: How to Make It Shiny
Want your chocolate to look glossy and professional? The secret is tempering!
Here’s how:
- Chop chocolate finely so it melts evenly.
- Melt gently over simmering water (never boiling) and keep stirring.
- Cool slightly to about 27-28°C, then warm back up to 31-32°C for dark chocolate (a little lower for milk or white).
- This stabilises the cocoa butter crystals and gives you that beautiful shine.
If you skip this step, your Yule log will still taste amazing, it just won’t have that glossy finish.
Step 3: Cover and Texture
Spread the melted chocolate all over your sponge roll. Spread in one direction for a neat look. If it starts to set, dip your knife in warm water and smooth gently, but make sure to wipe the knife completely dry before touching the chocolate so it doesn’t seize. Don’t worry if it’s messy, it’s meant to look rustic!

Now for the fun part: grab a fork and gently drag it through the chocolate whilst it’s still soft and glossy to make wood grain lines. This simple trick turns chocolate into a realistic log. Kids love this step because it feels like drawing in chocolate.

Step 4: Make It Snow
Sift icing sugar over the top for a snowy woodland effect. It’s quick, easy, and instantly festive. Let the kids take turns shaking the sieve, it’s like sprinkling magic dust!

Step 5: Sprinkle Some Fun
Add hundreds and thousands, I used celebration sprinkles for extra colour (edible glitter if you’re feeling extra fancy!) This is where your theme starts to shine, whether you’re going traditional or full on Christmas Candy Wonderland.

Step 6: Decorate!
The best part! Place your decorations on top. Pick one clear theme to keep your design cohesive.

Start with the bigger pieces first, trees or nutcracker, then fill in with smaller accents like baubles or lollipops. Play around until it looks balanced and fun.

✨ Corrina’s Design Secrets
- Use Odd Numbers: Decorate in groups of 3 or 5 for a natural look.
- Big Pieces First: Place larger decorations before adding smaller accents.
- Leave Breathing Space: A little chocolate showing through looks rustic and elegant.
- Balance Colours: Spread colours evenly, don’t cluster all pinks on one side.
- Add Height: Mix flat decorations with taller ones (like trees or candy sticks) for dimension.

For my Candy Land Yule log, I used pastel trees, doughnut, a pink wooden nutcracker, a blue cocoa mug, and a pink and red lollipop. It looked like a sugary dream! Next time, I’d love to make edible versions, think candy canes and pastel biscuits shaped like mugs and real mini doughnuts so everything can be eaten.
Step 7: Show It Off
Stand back and admire your masterpiece! If you’re gifting your Yule log (we gave ours to neighbours), pop it on a pretty plate and wrap it in clear cellophane with a ribbon. Add a gift tag with the flavour and a festive message. I wrote “A Little Slice of Candy Land – Merry Christmas!”
