The lodge had everything I dreamed of: floor to ceiling windows that framed the a stunning view of the lake, a mezzanine level perfect for spa treatments, and a terrace with a hot tub (yes, it was as dreamy as it sounds). Whether you’re planning something rustic and relaxed or a little more luxe, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Autumn is basically nature’s way of showing off, and your party décor can do the same. Think rich, warm tones like burnt orange, deep burgundy, golden yellow, and rustic browns. These colours don’t just look beautiful, they wrap your space in that unmistakable autumn glow.

For my birthday celebration, I leaned into the season’s palette with a mix of natural textures and cosy touches. Here’s how you can do the same:

Pumpkins, pinecones & berries: I scattered pumpkins in all shapes and sizes (real and decorative), pinecones, and berries throughout the space. They’re inexpensive, seasonal, and instantly charming.

Wooden accents: Log slices, apple crates, and rustic step ladders added a natural, earthy feel, perfect for centrepieces or display stands.

The result? A table that felt like a warm hug, inviting, beautiful, and totally on theme. Whether you go big or keep it simple, the key is to mix natural textures with seasonal colours and a few thoughtful details. It’s all in the detail, after all.

The whole space felt cwtch, that’s Welsh for a cosy hug, and exactly the mood I wanted.

Here’s how I set the scene:

Fill the space with warmth: The lodge had floor to ceiling windows and high ceilings, which were stunning but needed a little softening. The brilliant team at Eden Events brought in a tall backboard painted in a rich burnt orange, paired with an oversized balloon garland to bring colour, texture, and a bit of drama into the room. It made the space feel more intimate and totally on theme.

Dress the stairs: The wooden staircase became a rustic focal point with stacked apple crates, log slices, lanterns, and a cascade of leafy garlands, pumpkins, and pinecones. It was like autumn had moved in, and honestly, I didn’t want it to leave.

Scent the scene: Candles in pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and apple cider scents filled the air with cosy vibes. You could also use a diffuser with essential oils if you prefer a flameless option, either way, scent is a powerful mood setter.

Add playful touches: I didn’t include these myself, but how fun would a “witches’ broom parking” sign be at the entrance? Or pumpkin shaped soap dispensers and autumn themed hand towels in the bathroom? Little touches like these can really help transform your guests experience.

Frame the moment – I dotted 6×4 framed prints with seasonal quotes throughout the space, little pops of personality that tied everything together. (Psst… you can download them for free!)

Here’s how I brought the taste of autumn to the party:

DIY hot chocolate station: This was a total crowd pleaser. I set up a self serve station with cocoa, mini marshmallows, cinnamon sticks, whipped cream, and chocolate sprinkles. Guests could build their own perfect cup, and yes, I served them in pumpkin shaped mugs because… obviously.

Grazing boxes over grazing tables: I originally dreamed of a big, abundant grazing table, but space inside the lodge was limited. So instead, I asked a local company to create individual grazing boxes, and they were a win win. No crowding, no mess, and no washing up!

What’s inside? Sullivan’s Tea & Coffee Co catered my birthday party, and they absolutely nailed it. Each grazing box was made fresh on the day and beautifully presented with a colourful selection of antipasto, think meats, pâté, cheeses, crackers, olives, and roasted peppers, plus finger sandwiches in flavours like smoked salmon and cream cheese, coronation chicken, and cucumber with cream cheese. Not your typical autumn menu, maybe, but it was delicious.

Tarot card readings: My lovely friend Tasha H offered to do tarot readings for everyone, and it was such a hit. She brought her deck, a Palo Santo stick, and sage incense to cleanse the space before each reading. It added a spiritual, reflective touch, perfect for marking a milestone birthday.

It was the perfect way to wind down the evening, relaxed, indulgent, and totally in tune with the cosy autumn vibe.

Pumpkin mugs & cosy candles: I gifted each guest a pumpkin shaped mug, perfect for recreating our hot chocolate station at home. I also found small black candles that looked like mini cauldrons and added custom “witches brew” vinyl labels for a fun, witchy twist.

Wax melt magic: A local company, Foxy Scents, created a gorgeous box of autumn themed wax melts. Each scent had its own personality, from “Sweater Weather” to “Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte.” The presentation was beautiful, and the scents? Absolutely dreamy.

Handmade clay hearts: Grace’s Gifts made rustic clay hearts with wooden beads and twine, stamped with phrases like “Snuggle Season” and “Let’s Get Cosy.” They were the perfect finishing touch, simple, sweet, and full of charm.

I’d arranged for a yoga teacher to come by in the morning for a gentle stretch session on the deck. The idea was to ease into the day with a few deep breaths, some light movement, and a good dose of fresh air. The lake view made the perfect backdrop, calm, quiet, and the perfect setting to just be for a while.
