Planning the Perfect Autumn Party Location 🍂
When it comes to throwing an unforgettable autumn themed birthday bash, the setting is everything. Think of it as your party’s stage, and autumn gives you the most magical backdrop to play with. For my 40th, I chose Sylen Lakes Lodges, a cosy wooden lodge nestled in the Welsh countryside, and honestly? It was love at first leaf.

The lodge had everything I dreamed of: floor to ceiling windows that framed the a stunning view of the lake, a mezzanine level perfect for spa treatments, and a terrace with a hot tub (yes, it was as dreamy as it sounds). Whether you’re planning something rustic and relaxed or a little more luxe, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Go for golden hour: Autumn sunsets are pure magic. Choose a venue with big windows or outdoor space so you can soak up that golden glow.

Think zones: I created different areas for different vibes, spa treatments upstairs for a bit of private pampering, yoga and hot tub sessions out on the decking for activities in the fresh air, and a chill out lounge with floor cushions and a low level table for relaxed dining and chatting. It helped the party flow naturally and gave guests the freedom to dip in and out of whatever suited their mood.

Keep it close: Choose a location that’s easy for your guests to reach, but still feels like a little escape from the everyday. I picked Sylen Lakes, just 10 to 15 minutes out of town for most of us, and it was the perfect balance of accessible and tucked away. I sent out directions with a pin drop and a few handy landmarks, and happily, no one got lost (always a win!).

Make it yours: Whether it’s a lodge, a barn, or your own back garden, the key is to make the space feel warm, welcoming, and totally you.

Infusing Autumn Colours into the Décor 🍁
Autumn is basically nature’s way of showing off, and your party décor can do the same. Think rich, warm tones like burnt orange, deep burgundy, golden yellow, and rustic browns. These colours don’t just look beautiful, they wrap your space in that unmistakable autumn glow.

For my birthday celebration, I leaned into the season’s palette with a mix of natural textures and cosy touches. Here’s how you can do the same:
Layer in the leaves: Garlands of faux autumn leaves are a simple way to bring in colour and texture. Drape them over staircase rails, or even around door frames. I hung a leafy autumn wreath on the front door to welcome guests and give a seasonal first impression.
Pumpkins, pinecones & berries: I scattered pumpkins in all shapes and sizes (real and decorative), pinecones, and berries throughout the space. They’re inexpensive, seasonal, and instantly charming.
Wooden accents: Log slices, apple crates, and rustic step ladders added a natural, earthy feel, perfect for centrepieces or display stands.
Warm lighting: Candles, fairy lights, and lanterns created a soft, golden glow that made everything feel extra snuggly.

I chose a colour palette that tied everything together, from the table settings to the party favours, and it made the whole space feel intentional. It’s amazing what a few well placed pumpkins and a pop of amber can do!

How to Style a Beautiful Autumn Tablescape 🍽️
Let’s talk tables, because when it comes to autumn parties, your table isn’t just where the food goes. It’s where the magic happens. Whether you’re serving up a casual grazing board, or creating the perfect place to catch up with your friends, styling your tablescape is a chance to bring your autumn theme come to life.

For my birthday, I transformed the downstairs snug into a cosy dining nook with the help of a local event stylist Eden Events. Here’s how you can create your own autumnal table moment:
Nature knows best: Acorns, pinecones, and scattered leaves added a whimsical woodland touch without costing a penny.
Start with texture: I had a rustic wooden table layered with a natural runner, woven placemats, and soft linen napkins in warm, earthy tones. It instantly set the tone for a relaxed, seasonal vibe.
Add height and glow: Tapered candles in amber holders added a flickering warmth, while low vases filled with autumn blooms and mini pumpkins brought in colour and charm.
Keep it comfy: Floor cushions, plush throws, and layered rugs made the space feel like a boho autumn dream, perfect for lounging, laughing, and grazing.

The result? A table that felt like a warm hug, inviting, beautiful, and totally on theme. Whether you go big or keep it simple, the key is to mix natural textures with seasonal colours and a few thoughtful details. It’s all in the detail, after all.
The whole space felt cwtch, that’s Welsh for a cosy hug, and exactly the mood I wanted.

Setting the Tone with Cosy Autumn Décor 🕯️
Autumn décor is all about creating that “ahhh” feeling, the moment your guests walk in and feel instantly at home (but, like, the Pinterest version of home). For my birthday bash, I wanted the space to feel warm, welcoming, and just a little bit magical, and it all came down to the details.

Here’s how I set the scene:
Fill the space with warmth: The lodge had floor to ceiling windows and high ceilings, which were stunning but needed a little softening. The brilliant team at Eden Events brought in a tall backboard painted in a rich burnt orange, paired with an oversized balloon garland to bring colour, texture, and a bit of drama into the room. It made the space feel more intimate and totally on theme.

Dress the stairs: The wooden staircase became a rustic focal point with stacked apple crates, log slices, lanterns, and a cascade of leafy garlands, pumpkins, and pinecones. It was like autumn had moved in, and honestly, I didn’t want it to leave.

Scent the scene: Candles in pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and apple cider scents filled the air with cosy vibes. You could also use a diffuser with essential oils if you prefer a flameless option, either way, scent is a powerful mood setter.

Add playful touches: I didn’t include these myself, but how fun would a “witches’ broom parking” sign be at the entrance? Or pumpkin shaped soap dispensers and autumn themed hand towels in the bathroom? Little touches like these can really help transform your guests experience.
Frame the moment – I dotted 6×4 framed prints with seasonal quotes throughout the space, little pops of personality that tied everything together. (Psst… you can download them for free!)
Creating an Autumn Inspired Birthday Cake 🎂
Let’s be honest, no birthday party is complete without cake. And when it comes to an autumn themed celebration, your cake is more than just dessert… it’s a centrepiece, a conversation starter, and a chance to sneak in a little seasonal flair.

For my 40th, I was lucky enough to have a friend’s mum whip up a gorgeous semi naked cake with vanilla buttercream. It was topped with pumpkins, berries, and autumn leaves, all perched on a rustic log slice. The finishing touch? A gold “forty” topper that made it feel extra special.

Whether you bake it yourself, call in a favour, or order from a local baker, your autumn inspired cake is a chance to tie your theme together in the sweetest way possible.
Delighting the Senses with Autumn Inspired Refreshments ☕
Let’s be honest, autumn is basically a season built around snacks and warm drinks. So when it came to planning the menu for my birthday, I wanted to serve up flavours that felt like a hug in a mug (or a grazing box).

Here’s how I brought the taste of autumn to the party:
DIY hot chocolate station: This was a total crowd pleaser. I set up a self serve station with cocoa, mini marshmallows, cinnamon sticks, whipped cream, and chocolate sprinkles. Guests could build their own perfect cup, and yes, I served them in pumpkin shaped mugs because… obviously.

Grazing boxes over grazing tables: I originally dreamed of a big, abundant grazing table, but space inside the lodge was limited. So instead, I asked a local company to create individual grazing boxes, and they were a win win. No crowding, no mess, and no washing up!

What’s inside? Sullivan’s Tea & Coffee Co catered my birthday party, and they absolutely nailed it. Each grazing box was made fresh on the day and beautifully presented with a colourful selection of antipasto, think meats, pâté, cheeses, crackers, olives, and roasted peppers, plus finger sandwiches in flavours like smoked salmon and cream cheese, coronation chicken, and cucumber with cream cheese. Not your typical autumn menu, maybe, but it was delicious.

If you’re going for a more traditional autumnal spread, you could serve mini apple pies, butternut squash soup, or toffee apple cupcakes. But the beauty of an autumn party is that it’s all about comfort, so serve what makes you happy.
Enliven the Atmosphere with Autumn Themed Entertainment 🎉
A beautiful setting and delicious food are a great start, but it’s the entertainment that really brings a party to life. For my autumn birthday, I wanted to create moments that felt thoughtful, a little bit magical, and totally memorable. Here’s how I added a sprinkle of fun to the celebration:

Tarot card readings: My lovely friend Tasha H offered to do tarot readings for everyone, and it was such a hit. She brought her deck, a Palo Santo stick, and sage incense to cleanse the space before each reading. It added a spiritual, reflective touch, perfect for marking a milestone birthday.

A spiritual station: To display the tarot cards and set the mood, I styled a rustic stand with layers of autumnal charm. On the top shelf, I placed a star shaped tea light holder, a subtle nod to guidance and navigation, since stars have long symbolised finding your way (both literally and spiritually).

The second shelf held the tarot deck and cleansing tools like sage and Palo Santo, nestled among a log slice, a framed sign, pinecones, berries, and scattered autumn leaves.

On the bottom shelf, I placed personalised spiritual folders for each of my friends, a little keepsake filled with thoughtful printables like angel numbers, astrology charts, and year end reflection worksheets. It was a quiet corner of the party, but one that sparked the most conversation and connection.

Want to add a spiritual touch? Download my printable booklet for grounding, angel numbers, and year-end reflections here.
Inside you’ll find:
- 🧘 Spirituality Overview – a gentle introduction to grounding, energy, and intention setting
- 🪶 Feathers & their Meanings – symbolic interpretations of common feather colours and types
- 🔢 Angel Numbers Guide – what repeating numbers might be trying to tell you
- ✨ Year End Reflections – space to journal your growth, lessons, and gratitude
- 💫 Highlights, Disappointments & Game Changers – a reflective worksheet to close the year with clarity
Plus, tucked into each folder, I also included:
🌌 Personalised Astrology Birth Chart – a custom snapshot of each guest’s celestial blueprint
♎ Zodiac Star Sign Mini Book – a bite sized guide tailored to their sun sign, with traits, affirmations, and compatibility notes

In between tarot readings and flicking through the spiritual folders, we grazed on antipasto out on the terrace and dipped into the hot tub, bliss! But the girls were in for one last treat…

I booked Fresh Therapy, a mobile holistic therapy company that brings the spa to you. They transformed the mezzanine on the first floor into a peaceful retreat, tucked away just enough to feel private, but still close enough to stay connected to the party buzz. They arrived with everything: a massage couch, soft towels, fresh linen, flickering candles, and calming music that instantly set the mood.

Guests could choose from a dreamy menu of treatments, including manicures, pedicures, facials, back, neck and shoulder massages, Indian head massages, leg and foot massages, full body massages, and reflexology. Whether you wanted a quick pamper or a full on unwind, there was something for everyone.
It was the perfect way to wind down the evening, relaxed, indulgent, and totally in tune with the cosy autumn vibe.
Sending Guests Home with Autumnal Party Favours 🎁
As the evening winds down and the candles burn low, there’s something extra special about sending your guests home with a little token of thanks. It doesn’t have to be big or expensive, just thoughtful, seasonal, and a little bit magical.

Here’s how I wrapped up the night:
Pumpkin mugs & cosy candles: I gifted each guest a pumpkin shaped mug, perfect for recreating our hot chocolate station at home. I also found small black candles that looked like mini cauldrons and added custom “witches brew” vinyl labels for a fun, witchy twist.

Wax melt magic: A local company, Foxy Scents, created a gorgeous box of autumn themed wax melts. Each scent had its own personality, from “Sweater Weather” to “Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte.” The presentation was beautiful, and the scents? Absolutely dreamy.

Handmade clay hearts: Grace’s Gifts made rustic clay hearts with wooden beads and twine, stamped with phrases like “Snuggle Season” and “Let’s Get Cosy.” They were the perfect finishing touch, simple, sweet, and full of charm.

Wrapped with love: I bundled everything in cellophane, tied it with orange and black ribbon, and displayed the favours on a wooden step ladder decorated with leafy garlands, pinecones, and rustic props like a lantern and wicker basket.

Whether it’s a candle, a sweet treat, or a handwritten note, party favours are a lovely way to say “diolch” (thank you), because gratitude is always in season and a thoughtful favour is the perfect way to send guests home with a smile.
Capturing Early Morning Moments 🌅
Most of the gang headed home by midnight, but a few of us stayed over at the lodge for a slower start the next day.

I’d arranged for a yoga teacher to come by in the morning for a gentle stretch session on the deck. The idea was to ease into the day with a few deep breaths, some light movement, and a good dose of fresh air. The lake view made the perfect backdrop, calm, quiet, and the perfect setting to just be for a while.
We kept breakfast simple, think warm pastries, yoghurt pots, fresh fruit, and a few cheeky spoonfuls of Nutella (because why not?). I popped everything into a breakfast grazing box so we could nibble while wrapped in blankets on the terrace, watching the mist lift off the lake. It was quiet, cosy, and just what we needed after a night of celebrating.

It was a simple, cosy way to end the weekend, and a reminder that sometimes, the quietest moments are the ones that stick with you.
