How to Create a DIY Mum-osa Bar for a Birthday Party (Free Printables)

🕒 Reading Time: 6 minutes

Looking for a drinks station that’s easy to set up but still feels a little special? A DIY Mum-osa Bar is a simple way to create something interactive, stylish and personal for your celebration.

I first created this Mum-osa Bar for my mum’s 70th birthday, and it quickly became one of the most used features of the afternoon. Guests loved being able to mix their own drinks, choose their favourite garnishes and help themselves whenever they wanted.

What I love most about this idea is how easy it is to adapt. You can keep it completely alcohol-free, offer a mixture of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, or tailor it to suit the tastes of the person you’re celebrating.

Because everything is self-serve, it’s also surprisingly low maintenance once it’s set up, leaving you free to enjoy the party rather than constantly topping up drinks.

Why I Created a Mum-osa Bar

When planning Mum’s birthday, I wanted to include a drinks station that felt fun and celebratory without making it the centre of attention.

Mum has never really been much of a drinker, so a traditional mimosa bar didn’t feel quite right. Instead, I adapted the idea to suit the person we were celebrating, focusing on non-alcoholic fizz, fruit juices and fresh garnishes that guests could mix and match themselves.

The result was something that felt far more considered than simply putting bottles and glasses on a table. It gave guests another way to interact throughout the afternoon while still fitting naturally into the overall party. Best of all, it worked for everyone.

How I Set It Up

I kept the concept simple, but spent a little time thinking about how people would actually use the drinks station once the party was underway.

The setup was built around three key elements: drinks, serving equipment and garnishes.

The Drinks

I offered a mixture of sparkling drinks, juices and mixers so guests could create their own combinations.

For my setup, I used:

  • Non-alcoholic sparkling fizz
  • Orange juice
  • Cranberry juice
  • Lemonade

If you’re catering for a mixed crowd, you could easily offer both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options.

The Serving Setup

To make everything easy to access, I used:

  • Drinks dispensers for juices and mixers
  • Stands or risers to raise the dispensers
  • Bottles or carafes for sparkling drinks
  • Champagne or prosecco glasses

One lesson I learned very quickly is that raising the dispensers is essential. Without enough clearance underneath, guests will struggle to fit a glass beneath the tap.

The Garnishes

Fresh garnishes instantly make a drinks station feel more considered.

I used:

  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Lemon slices

along with small serving bowls, mini tongs and matching labels so everything felt organised and easy to use.

The Little Details That Made It Feel Special

The drinks themselves were only part of the setup. What really made the Mum-osa Bar feel special were the small details that tied it into the rest of the celebration.

I started with a tablecloth to create a clean base, then used risers to raise the drinks slightly at the back of the display. This made everything easier to see and helped the table feel more balanced.

Flowers were woven throughout the setup to connect it with the rest of the party décor. The same deep red, blush pink and cream tones appeared in the stationery, table decorations and cake, so carrying them through into the drinks station helped everything feel consistent.

The styling wasn’t complicated, but it was intentional.

Rather than scattering glasses across the table, I arranged them into a heart shape. Labels were placed wherever they made the most sense, either attached directly to dispensers or positioned in front of drinks and garnishes. The main Mum-osa Bar poster was displayed in a gold frame to match other signage used throughout the party and helped guide guests through the process of building their drinks.

Even the smallest details played a part. Fresh fruit was displayed in matching bowls, serving tongs were placed beside each garnish and all the labels followed the same floral design.

Individually, none of those choices would have made much difference. Together, they transformed a simple self-serve drinks station into a feature that felt like part of the celebration rather than an afterthought.

Tips I Learned on the Day

A few things I’d definitely do again:

Keep It Self Serve

Once a few people started creating their own drinks, everyone else quickly followed. The station worked best when guests could simply help themselves rather than waiting for someone to serve them.

Don’t Overcomplicate It

A small selection of drinks and garnishes was more than enough. People enjoyed mixing and matching different combinations without being overwhelmed by too many choices.

Think About the Order

I arranged the station so guests naturally moved from glasses to drinks and then to garnishes. The Mum-osa Bar poster also helped explain the process, making it obvious where to start and how to build a drink.

Label Everything

Clear labels made the station much easier to use and encouraged people to try different combinations throughout the afternoon.

Raise Your Dispensers

If you’re using drinks dispensers, make sure they’re high enough for a glass to fit comfortably underneath. It sounds obvious, but it’s one of the easiest details to overlook when you’re setting everything up.

Those small practical decisions made a big difference and helped everything run smoothly from start to finish.

What’s Included

I designed a full set of matching floral printables in advance, which made setting up far easier. I’ve created a matching printable pack featuring everything you need to recreate the display.

The pack includes:

  • Mum-osa Bar poster
  • Drinks labels
  • Garnish labels
  • Blank editable labels

I designed everything to coordinate with the rest of my floral birthday collection in deep red, blush pink and clotted cream.

Whether you’re creating a non-alcoholic drinks station like mine or adapting the idea for a traditional mimosa bar, the printables make it easy to create a setup that feels polished and pulled together.
