If you’ve only watched a handful of Friends episodes, this probably isn’t the post for you.
This is for the people who still put reruns on as background noise, can quote entire scenes without warning and know exactly why a chick, a duck and a lobster belong in the same conversation.
I put together this Friends Crap Bag for someone who knew the show inside out. The sort of person who could tell what episode was on within seconds, answer almost any trivia question correctly, and remember the weird little references most people forget.
A generic gift wasn’t going to cut it.
Instead, I created a Crap Bag inspired by Phoebe’s infamous name change, filling it with clues, gifts and episode references designed to test even the biggest Friends fans. Some of the clues are obvious. Others are based on throwaway jokes, random quotes and moments that only seem to stick after years of rewatching the series.
The gifts were only half the fun.
Working out the references was the real challenge.
I wrapped each gift in lavender paper inspired by Monica’s apartment door and added yellow peephole style labels with a clue attached. Before opening anything, the person I made it for had to work out which Friends moment the clue referred to and why it might connect to whatever was hidden inside.

Clue 1: The One with Mrs Ross and Mr Rachel
If you recognise this quote, you’ve probably already worked out where Ross and Rachel woke up the next morning. Think bright lights, casinos and a trip that ended very differently than either of them expected.

After a drunken night out in Las Vegas, Ross and Rachel do the one thing nobody expected them to do… they get married. As they leave the chapel, Ross grins and says, “Hello, Mrs Ross”, only for Rachel to reply, “Well hello, Mr Rachel.”
As soon as I knew I wanted to include a Vegas themed reference, a casino gift felt like the obvious choice. The little slot machine money box tied in perfectly with the bright lights, gambling and complete madness of the Vegas episodes, while still being small enough to fit inside the Crap Bag.
The money box was designed to look like a miniature slot machine, complete with spinning reels, a jackpot coin return and a working lever on the side. The chrome and black design looked exactly the sort of thing you’d expect to find in a Vegas casino, which made it a perfect fit for the clue. It even accepted real coins, making it a proper working money bank rather than just a novelty ornament.
I liked that it wasn’t an exact reference to Ross and Rachel themselves. Instead, it was a nod to the location behind the clue. Once you’d worked out the Vegas connection, the casino theme made perfect sense.
Looking back, this was probably one of the harder gifts to guess from the clue alone. Most Friends fans would immediately get the wedding reference, but connecting that to a slot machine took an extra step, which made it a great one to include in the challenge.
Clue 2: The One with the Joey Special
If you know Joey, you already know food is involved. This one isn’t about a specific episode so much as a running joke that perfectly sums up his attitude to takeaway night. Why order one when you can have two?

Joey’s love of food is one of the biggest running jokes in Friends, and the Joey Special might be the most Joey thing ever. The order first gets a mention when he’s in London for Ross’s wedding and tells Phoebe he’s homesick for one thing in particular: two pizzas. Later in the series, Chandler uses two pizzas as a peace offering after forgetting to tell Joey about an audition. Unsurprisingly, Joey forgives him almost immediately.
As soon as I started thinking about Joey themed gifts, the Joey Special went straight to the top of the list. I did consider using “Joey Doesn’t Share Food!” instead, but two pizzas felt much more fun to turn into a gift, especially as Joey has always been my favourite character.
The gift itself was a pair of miniature gummy pizzas, each tucked inside its own tiny cardboard pizza box. They looked just like miniature takeaway boxes, complete with colourful pizza branding on the front. Inside was a soft gummy pizza designed to look like the real thing, right down to the individual slices that could be pulled apart and shared… although Joey definitely wouldn’t approve of that part.
Clue 3: The One Where Later Is Not Good Enough
Most people would probably ask a friend for advice. Ross decides to ask something else entirely. If you remember one of his most memorable meltdowns, you might already have the answer.

Ross is probably the most academic member of the group. He has a PhD, works as a palaeontologist and usually likes to think of himself as the sensible one. Unfortunately, he’s also responsible for some of the show’s funniest overreactions.
At this point in the series, Emily has made it very clear that she doesn’t want Ross seeing Rachel anymore. Faced with an impossible decision, Ross starts looking for guidance and somehow ends up putting his future friendship with Rachel in the hands of a toy fortune teller.
The problem is that every time he asks a question, he gets another vague response. “Ask Again Later” eventually proves too much and leads to one of Ross’s classic frustrated outbursts. The more seriously Ross takes the situation, the funnier the scene becomes.
Watching a highly educated scientist argue with a toy fortune teller is peak Ross, which is exactly why this clue made it into the Crap Bag.
For the gift itself, I used a classic Magic 8 Ball, the same toy featured in the episode. Designed to look like an oversized pool ball, it gives random answers when shaken. Some responses are positive, some negative and some are deliberately unhelpful, which was probably part of Ross’s problem in the first place.
This was one of my favourite clues because the quote is memorable enough for most Friends fans to recognise, but the answer isn’t immediately obvious until the reference clicks into place.
Clue 4: The One with the Claws
A grainy home video, a prom night disaster and a realisation that changes everything. If you’re a Ross and Rachel fan, you’ll probably get this one pretty quickly.

Phoebe’s lobster theory has become one of the most recognisable Friends references of all time. While watching Rachel’s old prom video, she explains that lobsters mate for life and decides that Ross is Rachel’s lobster.
When the video reveals that Ross was secretly prepared to step in and take Rachel to prom after her date failed to show up, Rachel finally realises how much he has always cared about her. The moment ends with her kissing Ross while Phoebe excitedly shouts:
“See? He’s her lobster!”
As somebody who was always invested in the Ross and Rachel storyline, this episode was an easy choice for the Crap Bag. Friends is already nostalgic for me, but I love it even more when the show looks back on its own history. The prom video is one of those rare moments that ties everything together and completely rewards viewers who have been watching from the beginning.
For the gift itself, I chose a chrome lobster keyring with a separate metal tag engraved with the words“You’re My Lobster”. Like most of the gifts in the Crap Bag, it wasn’t official Friends merchandise. It was simply a small item that perfectly captured the reference behind the clue.
I also liked that this one balanced out some of the more humorous gifts in the bag. Between Joey’s pizzas, Ross arguing with a toy and an accidental Vegas wedding, it was nice to include something a little more sentimental too.
Clue 5: The One with Chuck or Dick
Two unlikely roommates, one ridiculous conversation and a joke that somehow sticks in your memory forever. This one comes from a throwaway joke that perfectly sums up Joey and Chandler’s friendship.

Joey and Chandler’s chick and duck started out as what was supposed to be a fairly short lived joke, but quickly became part of the family. Over the years they featured in some of the duo’s funniest storylines, from disappearing inside the foosball table to turning their apartment into what was essentially a very chaotic family home.
One of my favourite chick and duck moments happens when Rachel sneaks the birds into the hallway before a date, knocks on Joey and Chandler’s door, then rushes back inside. When Joey opens the door and finds them waiting outside the apartment, he stares at them in amazement and asks,“Hey, how did you do that?!” Genuinely believing they’ve somehow learned how to knock. It makes me laugh every time.
This particular clue comes from another great chick and duck moment. While talking about what might happen if the chick and duck ever had babies. Joey suggests they could combine their names and call the offspring “Chuck”. Without missing a beat, Chandler replies, “Or Dick.”
It’s classic Chandler. Completely deadpan, slightly inappropriate and made even funnier because Joey barely reacts.
For the gift itself, I used two farm animal pencil top erasers. One was a little yellow duck and the other a brown chick, making them a perfect nod to Joey and Chandler’s feathered flatmates. I tucked them inside a small gift box so they felt like a proper surprise rather than just a novelty extra.
What I like most about this clue is that it rewards people who remember the smaller moments. Most Friends fans remember the chick and duck. The “Chuck or Dick” conversation is the sort of joke that only really sticks if you’ve watched the series more times than you’d care to admit.
Clue 6: The One with All the Chocolate You Want
An airport arrival, an impatient Joey and something sticking out of Emily’s bag that’s impossible to ignore.

This clue comes from one of those tiny Friends moments that lasts less than a minute but somehow sticks in your memory. When Emily arrives from London, Joey becomes completely distracted by the giant Toblerone sticking out of her duty free bag.
While everyone else is focused on the conversation, Joey is focused entirely on the chocolate. Eventually he interrupts and asks if he can have some. Emily finally gives in and tells him,“Yes, Joey, you can have all the chocolate you want. Just take it!”
It’s such a small joke, but it makes me laugh every time because it’s so perfectly Joey. He couldn’t care less about the drama unfolding around him. He’s spotted a Toblerone and that instantly becomes his priority.
As a self confessed chocoholic, I knew I wanted to include some sort of chocolate treat in the Crap Bag, so this clue felt like an easy win. Unlike some of the other gifts, it was also one of the easiest to source.
For the gift itself, I used a classic Swiss Toblerone. It was probably the only item in the entire Crap Bag that could be identified before it was opened. The distinctive triangular shape makes it very difficult to disguise, especially if you’re familiar with airport duty free shops.
Clue 7: The One Where It’s All Relative
A high stakes quiz, an apartment swap and a group of friends who are far more competitive than they should be. If you remember Ross playing gameshow host, you’re already on the right track.

If there was ever a Friends episode designed for superfans, this is probably it. Ross’s quiz to decide which pair knows each other best remains one of the most memorable games in the entire series. What starts as a bit of fun quickly escalates into a full blown competition, eventually ending with Monica and Rachel losing their apartment to Joey and Chandler.
The clue comes from one of the quiz categories,“It’s All Relative”, which focused on questions about the characters’ families. Like a lot of the best Friends moments, the game combines ridiculous competitiveness with some genuinely brilliant one liners.
Out of all the gifts in the Crap Bag, this was the only one I made myself. I sat down with the episode, paused every question and recreated Ross’s quiz from start to finish, right through to the final Transponster question.
The person I made the bag for was convinced he knew Friends better than anyone else, so it seemed only fair to put that confidence to the test.

Clue 8: The One at the Coffee House
Ten seasons, six friends and one place they always seemed to end up. The final scene may take place somewhere else, but the last conversation is about returning to a place that has been there from the very beginning.

Some gifts were chosen because they referenced a specific joke. Others represented something much bigger. This was one of those gifts.
Although Friends begins with Rachel running into a coffee house wearing a soaking wet wedding dress and ends in Monica’s apartment, a huge part of the series revolves around the place the group always returned to. Whether they were celebrating, arguing, dating, procrastinating or simply avoiding work, they somehow ended up sitting on the same orange sofa.
That’s why I loved the final exchange in the series so much. After ten seasons together, Rachel suggests they go for coffee one last time. Chandler looks around the empty apartment and asks:
“Where?”
It’s a simple joke, but it works because everyone already knows the answer.
I knew this had to be the final gift in the Crap Bag. Not only because it references the heart of the show, but because it felt like the perfect way to end the challenge.
The gift itself was the LEGO Central Perk set. Unlike most of the other presents in the bag, this was definitely a splurge purchase, but the rest of the gifts were relatively inexpensive, which made it easier to justify spending a little more on the final reveal.
LEGO was also an easy choice because the person I made the Crap Bag for loved building sets almost as much as he loved Friends. It felt far more personal than buying a piece of official merchandise and turned the reference into something interactive that could actually be displayed afterwards.
Looking back, it was probably the perfect final gift. The Crap Bag started with references, clues and inside jokes, but it ended with the place that brought all six friends together in the first place.
