Looking for an easy birthday game that gets everyone chatting? A How Well Do You Know Mum? quiz is one of those simple ideas that always goes down well.
I first created this quiz for my mum’s 70th birthday, and it quickly became one of the most talked about activities of the day. There were plenty of laughs, a few surprises and several moments where people were absolutely convinced they knew the correct answer, only to be completely wrong.
What makes this game so special is how easy it is to personalise. Whether you’re celebrating a parent, grandparent, partner, friend or colleague, the questions can be tailored to reflect their personality, memories and favourite things.

How It Works
The idea is simple. Guests answer a series of questions about the person being celebrated and try to score as many correct answers as possible.
The questions can be sentimental, funny, surprising or completely ridiculous, depending on who you’re celebrating. Once everyone has completed their answer sheet, reveal the answers and see who comes out on top.
For an extra twist, ask the person you’re celebrating to complete a copy of the quiz too. Some of the biggest laughs come when their answers don’t match what everyone expected.
While there may be a winner, that’s rarely the most memorable part of the game. Revealing the answers is where the real fun begins.
How I Chose the Questions
The secret to a great How Well Do You Know…? quiz isn’t asking factual questions that everyone already knows the answer to.
Questions about birthdays, eye colour and middle names might test memory, but they rarely create much conversation.
Instead, I focused on questions that revealed personality, sparked discussion and sometimes even surprised the person at the centre of the celebration. The best questions are usually the ones without an obvious answer.

Superhero powers, celebrity crushes, guilty pleasure TV shows, childhood ambitions and family traditions often generate far more laughter than straightforward factual questions.
When creating your own quiz, try to include a mixture of sentimental, funny and unexpected questions. The variety keeps everyone engaged and helps the game feel much more personal.

Why It Worked So Well
What surprised me most was how often people second guessed themselves.
Questions that seemed straightforward at first (favourite snacks and childhood ambitions) quickly turned into debates, with everyone convinced they knew the right answer. More than once, somebody confidently gave an answer only to discover they were completely wrong.

The silly questions generated the biggest reactions. the superpower, go to karaoke song and bucket list proved far more entertaining than simple factual questions because there isn’t always one obvious answer.
Another thing that worked particularly well was allowing Mum to answer the questions too. Rather than treating the answers as fixed facts, it turned the quiz into an ongoing conversation. Some answers were exactly what everyone expected, while others genuinely caught people by surprise.
Because the quiz focuses on personality rather than trivia, it works for almost any celebration. Whether you’re planning a milestone birthday, retirement party, anniversary or family gathering, it’s a simple way to shine a spotlight on the person everyone was there to celebrate and learn a few new things about them at the same time.
