I’ve been line dancing since I was 17, so seeing everyone embrace the cowgirl era feels like the world’s finally caught up. But this isn’t just a party trend, it’s a full on cultural moment.

Beyoncé dropped a country album (Cowboy Carter), Taylor Swift’s country roots are back in the spotlight, and Yellowstone has made ranch life look seriously cool. Bella Hadid is dating a rodeo star and showing up at real life rodeos in full cowgirl chic. TikTok is flooded with #cowgirl #trailride line dance tutorials and “Last Rodeo” party inspo. And don’t even get me started on the Pink Pony Club aesthetic; hot pink, glitter, and rhinestone boots? Yes please. (Note to self: that deserves its own blog post.)

Learning the Lingo: Cowgirl Terms & Dance Moves

Before you boot-scoot onto the dance floor, here’s a quick crash course in cowgirl slang and line dance basics. You don’t need to know it all, but dropping a few of these terms will definitely earn you some yeehaws!

  • Grapevine – A classic line dance move: step to the side, cross behind, step again, tap. It’s in loads of beginner routines.
  • Kick-ball-change – A little kick followed by a quick step-switch. Fancy footwork!
  • Boot-scootin’ – Just another way to say dancing! If you’re moving your feet, you’re scootin’.
  • Last Rodeo – A cheeky way to say it’s your final fling before the ring. Often used on hen party invites and decor.
  • Honky-tonk – A country bar with live music, dancing, and good vibes. If your hen party’s got this energy, you’re doing it right.
  • Yeehaw energy – That wild, glittery, let’s-go kind of vibe. Essential for any cowgirl themed celebration.
  • Pink Pony Club – A rising aesthetic that mixes hot pink, glitter, and rhinestone boots. Think disco cowgirl meets pop diva.
  • TikTok trail ride – Viral line dance challenges and cowgirl outfit inspo. Perfect for planning your party playlist or outfit.

5 Beginner Line Dances to Try

Whether you’re planning a mini class or just want a fun moment with your girl gang, these beginner friendly dances are easy to learn and guaranteed to get everyone moving.

1. Electric Slide

The first line dance I ever learnt, and it’s still a total classic. It’s simple, repetitive, and works with loads of songs. I learnt it to “I Like It, I Love It,” by Tim McGraw, which gives that old-school, raw country-and-western vibe. But it also pairs nicely with “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” by Shania Twain, a hen party anthem if there ever was one.

Fun fact: The Electric Slide is also a staple in Black party culture, often danced with a slightly different step: step-close-step instead of the more widely taught:  step-back-1-2-3. Same groove, different flavour!

If you’ve never line danced before, this is the one to start with.

2. Cupid Shuffle

This one’s a party favourite because the instructions are in the song. No need to memorise anything, just follow along and shuffle with confidence.

3. Stand By Me

This one’s got a nostalgic vibe and a steady beat, perfect for slowing things down and giving everyone a breather between the faster dances. It’s also a great warm-up or cool-down routine if you’re planning a mini line dance class.

4. A Bar Song (Tipsy)

This one’s modern, cheeky, and sooo much fun. I taught it to my friends during the hen party, and it quickly became our dance. When it came on during the wedding reception, we instantly took over the dancefloor. It was one of those spontaneous, unforgettable moments that brought all the hen party energy flooding back.

If you want to see how we danced it, and how my girls styled their cowgirl looks, check out the Saturday night section of my hen party blog. From Bridal Bandita to Cowhide Cutie, Rebel Rider, and Pink Rodeo Darling, everyone brought their own twist to the theme. We weren’t wearing glitter cowgirl boots at the wedding (sadly!), but on that starlit dancefloor, it definitely felt like we were.

5. Gives Me Shivers (Ed Sheeran)

This one’s got a bit more flair than the others, an improver dance, and a great way to end your hen party dance session with a bang! The routine includes grapevines, step touches, jazz boxes, and hip rolls, so it feels more like a mini performance than just a dance.

TikTok Bonus: The Austin Line Dance

If you want to add a trending twist to your “Last Rodeo”, try the Austin Line Dance. It’s beginner friendly, includes grapevines, heel taps, and jazz boxes, and looks fab when done in a group. It’s all over TikTok right now and definitely worth learning if you want your “Last Rodeo” hen party to go viral.
