Get your gang together, get your mis-matching coffee mugs out and reminisce over all 236 episodes of one of the best comedy shows ever!
You may want to host a baby shower, a birthday party, a wedding, a bridal shower, a hen party or a party just because!
No matter what the occasion, a Friends theme CAN work! Here are eight easy steps showing you how to throw a successful Friends themed party that Monica would approve of.
- Costume Ideas
- Party Decorations
- Focus Point
- Party Drinks
- Party Food
- Music
- Games and Activities
- Party Favours
1. Friends Themed Costumes
So you’ve invited your guests and told them where and when your Friends themed party is. You could have some real fun and make sure there’s a strict dress code policy.

If you are a group of friends, you could dress up in bridal gowns and recreate the scene where Monica, Rachel and Phoebe sit on the couch in wedding dresses, drinking beers.
If you are looking for a couples outfit, Rachel and Ross as Vegas newlyweds is a worthy choice.
You could even move away from the six main characters and dress as Estelle, Gunther or Janice! They all have unique looks you could copy.
I came across a blog by AveWill, who absolutely nailed Rachels everyday outfits! I would highly recommend visiting her blog post for some wardrobe inspiration.
Friends Name Tag Ideas
If you want to pay attention to tiny details, you could give everybody two name tags at your party just like Dr. Geller, sorry I mean Ross!

2. Friends Party Decorations
This is the part I love; it’s all in the details. Your friends will appreciate the extra attention you put into the decorations.
This section covers the following:
Monica’s Apartment Door
Monica’s purple door with yellow framed peephole should be the first thing your guests spot as they enter your party.
Most people replicate Monica’s apartment door by covering an internal door in their home, and attach a framed peephole. You could tweak this idea by decorating something different, such as a cushion, like the one in the picture above.
Or you could parcel gifts in a lavender and yellow theme and create a cute display.
Take a look at how to create a purple and yellow Friends gift display here with this Monica’s door inspired crap bag gift.
Moving on to room décor, I adore this beautiful New Jersey venue Aqua Blue Kitchen. The dining room light fixture resembles Monica’s apartment door on the ceiling! Just Wow!
I am not suggesting you go to this extreme level with your décor but I’ve included it to spark your imagination. You could find another way to incorporate the colours into your party. For example, you could create a purple and yellow tablescape and place themed party favours at each setting.
You could decorate your party with peephole frame pictures or captions. If you are creative, you could make your own Friends peephole frame.
There are plenty of videos online to choose from. I personally like the end result of Its Renee’s DIY tutorial.
Friends Party Captions
How ever you decide to decorate your party, I recommend you to include some well-loved quotes from the show. This inexpensive detail will be worth it!
It is best to tailor your quotes according to your party theme. You could use romantic quotes for a hen party, bridal shower or wedding. You could use funny quotes from the Thanksgiving episodes for a festive gathering. If your party is just for fun, this is your chance to get creative!

Friends Themed Party Props
Your Friends themed party décor will look great if you use accessories to your advantage and immerse your guests into the show.
In this one picture by Fern and Maple there are so many themed props that Friends fans will spot immediately! With a quick look, I can see Phoebe’s guitar with lobster sticker, a paper cup garland, a yellow taxi cab, yellow peephole frames, a Central Perk menu board and my favourite – a cushion with a quote by Chandler Cushions are the Essence of the Chair. Can you spot anymore? Please leave a comment so I can see my post is actually being read and you’re not just looking at all of the pictures 😉
I have done a quick brainstorm and come up with a list of party prop ideas for you to feature at your party:
- Oversized coffee mugs and a reserved sign
- Dinosaur bones and fossils
- Boarding passes to London, Paris or Vegas
- Giant poking device made out of chopsticks
- Chick and duck
- Opening credit umbrellas
- Ross’ sandwich (with a note attached)
- Vegas chapel sign
- Poker chips and playing cards
- Pat the dog
- Peephole frames
- TV Guide (with Days of Our Lives on the front cover)
- Hugsy the stuffed penguin
- Central Perk menu board
- Rachel’s Be Your Own Windkeeper book
- Lobsters
- Turkey with glasses and red fez hat
- Richard’s moustaches
- Science Boy comic book
- Holiday candy basket
- Birthday crown
- New York memorabilia
- Director’s clapperboard
- Big Brown Bag
- Phoebe’s guitar
- Ross’ freebie list – laminated of course
- Monica’s vintage cookie time clock
- Magna doodle magnetic drawing board
- Magic 8 ball
- The Shining book hidden in the freezer
- Toy taxi cab
- Gladiator helmet
- Marcel with a remote control
Take a look at Dawn and Ian’s Friends inspired wedding. I love how this couple incorporated themed props from the TV sitcom to decorate their wedding party.
Accessories relating to each character were aptly displayed to create some amazing table centrepieces, including a Central Perk menu board in place of a wedding breakfast seating plan.
Here is another fantastic example of using themed props at your party.
Melanie Baker hosted a party at her home in Texas to celebrate her daughter’s 25th birthday which happened to coincide with Friends’ 25th Anniversary. Props have been cleverly placed around her home. From Dr. Richard Burke’s cigar, to Marcel holding a remote control, to the whole range of Monica’s towels folded in the bathroom. The level of detail is impressive.
Let’s look closer at the bathroom as it is full of references to the show. The bath tub has been filled up with bubbles, and candles have been lit, a toy ship can be seen floating in the tub and Enya can be heard playing in the background. The towels have been labelled with guest towels and fancy towels and Melanie has even left lotion for those times when you need to remove your leather trousers! Party goals for sure!
Cups and Ice Friends Themed Party
If you don’t like any of the décor ideas so far then you can always organise a party like Phoebe by decorating the entire room with nothing but cups and ice:
- Cup hats
- Cup necklaces
- Cup bunting
- Cup chandeliers
- Cup garlands and bunting
- Cup towers
- Cup pots to serve appetisers
- Cup themed party games
As for ice, bring a whole variety for everyone to enjoy; crushed, cubed and dry ice, as well as snow cones.
3. Friends Party Focus Point
I have suggested you add some well-placed props around your party venue. I would also recommend your party have a focus point too.
This section covers the following:
You can create an impact by focusing your design and styling efforts on just one space. It is the thing that your guests will still talk about once it is all over. Whether you choose a delicious dessert table, an incredible photo booth or a stunning backdrop, your aim is to hold your guests attention.
Friends Themed Dessert Table
You can have your cake and eat it too! A dessert table can add a sense of wow to even the most simple cake. You can add other desserts such as cookies, cake pops, cupcakes, macaroons, popcorn and sweets. Use jars, cake stands and plates of different shapes and sizes to make your table look interesting.
I like to see symmetry with a dessert table with the cake in the centre. Everything should visually flow with colour and style.
As well as tasty desserts, you can decorate your table with fun props such as umbrellas, flowers, balloons, and quotes from the show. Friends is a comedy sitcom, so primary pops of colours go perfectly well to create a bright-and-bold table display. The font is fun, and the props can be silly. I would choose a block colour for the backdrop as your props and treats will likely be full of colour. Basically, everything that Melixa of Dias de Fiesta has created in her set up below!
If you are looking at hosting an elegant party such as a bridal shower or wedding then you may opt for an elegant dessert table. I suggest removing the renowned primary colours and choose muted tones just like event planner Flávia Ribeiro.
Ashton Events created this beautiful Friends themed graduation garden party.
They used muted tones for the furniture and left the natural backdrop create a rustic vibe, which goes well with their plant inspired party favours. Their set up is simple, yet has that wow factor by using subtle details.
Can you see the majority of colour is black and white in the tablecloths, signs, labels and party favours? They have incorporated a soft lavender and a soft yellow as their pops of colour to pay homage to the Friends theme.
Friends Themed Photo Booth
These days, a photo booth is a must have. A party isn’t a party without one, and it works perfectly as a focus point!
You have the fun decision of choosing a Friends themed backdrop to create your photo booth. Here are some backdrop ideas I have come up with:
- New York City skyline
- Central Perk logo with exposed brickwork
- Vegas chapel
- Prom: Class of 1988
- Monica’s apartment door
- Water fountain
- Plain black backdrop with Friends font
The most recognisable scene is the Central Perk set up. A large sofa, vintage floor lamp and a few colourful umbrellas. Your guests would have a lot of fun re-enacting the opening credits!
If you have space at your venue, why not include a coffee table? You could set up a reserved sign and display Days of Our Lives magazines along with some oversized coffee mugs.
Alternatively, if you want a straightforward photo booth, forge the sofa, hang a cloth backdrop or foil curtain and add some selfie sticks.
Other photo booth props could include plush lobsters, the Rachel haircut wig, a chef hat, a TV show clapperboard, a wedding veil, leather trousers, a turkey hat with glasses, a plush monkey, colourful umbrellas, a cheerleader outfit, a Knicks basketball jersey and cap… you get the picture!
4. Friends Themed Party Drinks
You can’t host a party without drinks. As you’re throwing a Friends themed party, you should let your guests live out their coffee filled dreams. What better way than to re-create the famous hangout?
Set up the Central Perk coffee shop with drinks station, chalk board menu, and those giant mis-matching coffee mugs.
If you are the creative type, you could paint the Central Perk logo onto a large glass frame to copy the front window of the coffee shop. Fix it onto an easel and display your handy work.
If you want alcohol on the menu rather than a cup of coffee then look no further than Dani-The Big Tid‘s idea. She created custom cocktails designed with each character in mind.
The Ross: Dino Daiquiri:
The Chandler: Bing’s Bees Knees:
The Monica: Vegan, Healthy(ish) Boozy Milkshake:
The Phoebe: Flower Power Mojito:
The Joey: Loaded Bloody Mary:
The Rachel: Closure Cosmo:
Pretty cool huh? You can get all six recipes if you sign up to Dani’s eBook.
if you want to stick to one cocktail how about including Ross’ margaritas from the episode The One Where Ross Is Fine.
If you are serving your guests wine, add a bit of detail by hanging labels off the bottles with a note from Paul the Wine Guy.
5. Friends Themed Party Food
Monica works as a chef, and Joey has a huge appetite, so there is no surprise by how many references there are about food.
Planning a menu for your party shouldn’t be an issue, as there are plenty of fun dishes to pick out from various episodes. Hopefully, some of these ideas can help inspire your party menu.
- Ross’ Fajitas
- Joey’s Meatball Subs
- Joey’s Sandwiches
- Ross’ Holiday Armajello
- Monica’s Dirty Salad
- Monica’s Mocklate (chocolate)
- Ross’ Spudnik Salad (potato salad)
- Ross’ Basket of Mini Muffins
- Monica’s Dozen Lasagnas
- Rachel’s English Trifle
- Monica’s Little Drops of Heaven (sweets)
- Phoebe’s Grandma’s Cookies (nestle toulouse chocolate chip cookies)
- Phoebe’s Hummus
- Chandler’s Mac and Cheese
- Chandler’s Stolen Cheesecake
- Joey’s Special (2 pizzas)
- Monica’s Finger Nail Quiche
- Monica’s Holiday Candy
Joey doesn’t share food!!!
Joey Tribbiani
Don’t forget to include Ross’ moist maker sandwich with the knock knock note attached: Knock-knock. Who’s there? Ross Geller’s lunch. Ross Geller’s lunch, who? Ross Geller’s lunch, please don’t take me. Ok?
You could decorate your buffet table with a banner that says, Joey Doesn’t Share Food! or The One with the Dinner Party.
6. Music
This section covers the following:
Friends Themed Party Playlist
If you are looking for ideas for some background music, then I’ve listed 15 songs you can include on your party playlist:
- The Rembrandts – I’ll Be There For You (The original theme song)
- Carpenters – Top Of The World S1 E7 (Joey, Monica and Phoebe sing during a blackout whilst Ross fights with a cat)
- The Tokens – The Lion Sleeps Tonight S1 E18 (The song played non-stop by Ross’ monkey Marcel)
- Hootie & the Blowfish – I Go Blind S2 E5 (At the concert)
- U2 – With or Without You S2 E7 (Rachel and Ross kiss at the coffee shop)
- Eric Carmen – All By Myself S2 E17 (Chandler and Joey in their apartments missing each other)
- Nelly – Ride With Me S5 E22 (The policeman stops Rachel)
- Donna Summer – Love to Love You Baby S5 E23 (Rachel dances naked)
- Elvis Presley – Viva Las Vegas S5 E23 (Chandler and Monica see Rachel and Ross coming out of a Vegas chapel, married!)
- Loreta – Trouble With Boys S6 E10 (Monica and Ross dance to ‘The Routine’)
- Eric Clapton – Wonderful Tonight S6 E25 (Chandler and Monica dance after their engagement)
- Semisonic – Closing Time S8 E5 (The song plays at the end of the series when Rachel walks into the coffee shop)
- The Police – Roxanne S8 E10 (Phoebe sings to Ross the song of Sting by making a change to the lyrics)
- Sir Mix-a-Lot – Baby Got Back S9 E7 (Rachel and Ross sing to Emma to make her laugh)
- Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just Wanna Have Fun S10 (Montage of Phoebe, Monica and Rachel’s moments together)
Phoebe Karaoke
How about playing Phoebe Karaoke at your party? Set up a mic and print out Phoebe’s lyrics beforehand. Click here for an in-depth list of her songs from the show. Besides Smelly Cat, here are three of my personal favourites:
No Power
New York City has no power,
And the milk is getting sour.
But to me it is not scary,
‘Cause I stay away from dairy.
LA la, la LA la, LA la…
The Cow in the Meadow
Oh, the cow in the meadow goes moo,
Oh, the cow in the meadow goes moo.
Then the farmer hits him on the head and grinds him up,
And that’s how we get hamburgers.
Now, chickens!
Chandler
The first time I met Chandler
I thought he was gay,
But here I am singing
On his wedding day.
If you don’t think you can get willing karaoke singers, set the scene by placing an acoustic guitar as a prop with a handwritten note Back In 5 Minutes, as a nod to Phoebe’s iconic gigs at Central Perk. You can play this video of Phoebe’s songs in the background.
7. Friends Themed Games and Activities
A party atmosphere is everything, but it is often the games and activities that take centre stage. Here are some games to immerse yourself in your favourite TV show.
This section covers the following:
- The Geller Cup
- Cups
- Poker
- Turkey Head Obstacle Course
- Who Am I?
- The Routine
- Foosball
- It’s All Relative
The Geller Cup
The Geller Cup was a trophy that Monica and Ross used to compete for during their childhood game of touch football.
Monica and Ross were banned by their parents from competing in the Geller Bowl because Monica broke Ross’ nose by elbowing him in the face. The Geller Cup was tossed into a lake and forgotten about.
Unbeknown to Ross, Monica retrieved the troll doll nailed to a two-by-four (which Chandler points out in the episode), and so a competitive Geller Bowl ensued with all of the friends competing.
Whatever game or activity you choose for your party, your guests could compete for The Geller Cup.
Make your trophy using an old beat-up can, cedar wood 2 x 4 block, and a troll doll. Use a label maker to write the names of past winners. To make it look authentic, use watered-down acrylic paint for dirt so it appears to have been rescued from the lake.
Cups
Cups was a game invented by Chandler with the intention that Joey won, so he would accept money to cover his bills when Chandler moved out of the apartment.
The game was made up on the spot – and every move Joey made resulted in him winning money. Joey believed he was lucky at the game, so he later challenged Ross but lost all his winnings!
If you want to teach your party guests how to play, check out the rules of the Cups game here.
Poker
Allow your party guests to practice their poker face as they play against each other for the best hand. This is a reference to the episode where the girls take on the guys in a game of poker.
You can set up a simple poker table at your party. Try not to throw away two Jacks because they look unhappy! You can add other casino-style games, such as blackjack and roulette – a nod to the Vegas episodes.
Turkey Head Obstacle Course
This idea came from the Queen of Theme Party Games blog. I love it, but I don’t think it would suit a formal occasion like a wedding. Although it would be great fun at a birthday bash!
For the obstacle course place a Thanksgiving turkey on your head and a Fez hat and glasses. Race through the obstacle course as fast as possible.
You can put your obstacle course together however you like with any number of challenges. Here are some ideas:
- Put on all of Chandler’s clothes
- Walk down the aisle
- Make a poking device out of chopsticks
- Pivot the couch
- Line up stuffed animals in size order (chick, duck, Pat the dog, Marcel the monkey, Hugsy the penguin, Smelly cat, lobster, Eddie’s goldfish)
- Write down as many 50 states as you can in 3 minutes
- Crawl like a lobster
- Drink a gallon of milk in 10 seconds
- Make Ross’ sandwich
- Figure out which cookie is a Nestlé Toll House chocolate chip cookie
- Play catch (but don’t be the dropper!)
- Race a couple of wind-up toy race
- Put nappies on the triplet dolls
- Draw a picture on a Magna doodle
- Don’t spill the coffee (like an egg and spoon race)
- Finalise the course with a trivia question – What is Chandler Bing’s job?
Have each player run through the course as fast as they can. Time each player and award the one with the fastest time a prize.
Who Am I?
A great guessing game where your guests use closed questions to guess the identity of the Friends character you have labelled them with.
You should include the core cast, as well as a few with smaller parts to get you guessing (Ross’ ex-wife Carol, Sandy, the male nanny or Dr. Richard Burke are just a few examples). Take a look at my list of Friends Name Tag Ideas at the beginning of this post for more inspiration.
Has your character been divorced? Did your character have a stuffed penguin? Was your character ON A BREAK? Did your character have a barcalounger?
The Routine
Who can forget the episode where Monica and Ross repeat their dance routine from middle school? The Routine would make a perfect first dance at a Friends themed wedding.
Alternatively, you could hire a choreographer to hold a mini dance class at your birthday party for your guests to recreate The Routine. Don’t forget to film it, just for the bloopers! 😉
This poster shows The Routine broken up into ten easy steps. Thanks to Comedy Central, here is a ten-step guide to wow on the dance floor.
Foosball
Foosball was a major part of the show, especially for Joey and Chandler. From using it as a dining table, to losing their pet chick and duck inside, to competing to settle old debts!
Whether you have your own foosball table or want to buy a smaller table-top one for the occasion, it’s totally up to you! You can have a foosball tournament and bring some friendly competition to your party. It would double up as themed décor too.
It’s All Relative
I love a quiz as much as the next person, so I thought it would be a fun reference to include the famous trivia quiz that forced Monica and Rachel to give up their apartment.
You could ask your guests the same quiz questions that were featured in the show. A full list of the questions can be found here.
If your party guests are die hard fans then these questions may be too easy for them. You could always make your own questions using the four categories: Fears & Pet Peeves, Ancient History, Literature, and It’s All Relative, as well as a lightning round.
8. Friends Themed Party Favours
I would pay attention to your party favours, as they are the last thing to make an impression on your guests.
This section covers the following:
Phoebe’s Grandma’s Cookies
I know these have already been mentioned in the party food section already. I think it’s worth including them as a party favour as I have a sweet tooth, but I also love the way they look when wrapped up.
You could wrap the cookies in a brown paper bag, sealed with a Central Perk logo sticker. Inside the bag you could include Phoebe’s Grandma’s secret recipe with a note thanking your party guests for coming.
Friends Themed Crap Bag Gift
I’ve written a post on creating your very own Crap Bag full of Friends themed goodies. You’ll be glad to learn that it’s a lot shorter than this one! I made a crap bag for my Fiancé’s birthday as he’s slightly obsessed with the show. You can read it here to steal some ideas.
I prefer the crap bag design to look like Monica’s apartment door, with a lavender-coloured bag and yellow peephole tag design, as opposed to a bag with poop emojis printed all over it.
Here are a list of budget friendly ideas you can include in your crap bag:
- We were on a break Kit Kat
- Lottery ticket (from when the gang pitched in to buy lottery tickets)
- Lobster keyring
- Mini magna doodle – I’m pretty sure I’ve seen them in the pound shop
- I love NY t-shirt or badge
- Bar of Monica’s Mockolate
- Faux massage voucher from your beauty therapist Phoebe
- Toblerone
- Toy dinosaur figures
- Teeth whitener
- Coffee sachet
- London Union Jack fridge magnet or hat
- Sneeze muffin
- Magic 8 ball
If you are looking for a different option to a crap bag, then I love the idea of guests taking home a Dino Bag as a play on words of a traditional Doggy Bag, plus it has a fun link to Ross’ palaeontology career.
Friends Coffee Mug Party Favour
You could gift a personalised coffee mug to thank your guests for coming.
You could customise the mugs before the party starts with character names, short quotes from the show or even a personalised message such as The One Where XXX Gets Married.
You could even have a crafting station at your party where guests could personalise their own coffee mugs. Leave some Sharpie marker pens and stencils and watch your guests get creative. Who knew coffee mugs were so versatile?
I think a gift relating to coffee or Central Perk would be an ideal way to end your party considering in the finale, the gang heads for one last cup of coffee as they walk off set.
Here’s a little fun fact about the Season 10 finale. The set of Central Perk was torn down so that the crew could build the airport where Rachel and Ross said goodbye in the final episode. So, in the final scene, when Rachel asked if they wanted to get one last coffee, and Chandler asked where? this was sincere since there was nowhere for them to go!
After all of this reading, you must be feeling bamboozled. Now ask yourself, could you BE anymore prepared?
