Here are 8 easy steps to help you throw a Friends themed bash that even Monica would approve of.

Let’s start with the fun stuff… costumes! Once your invites are out and your guests know when and where to show up, it’s time to set the tone with a dress code that screams Friends!

With ten seasons of iconic outfits, the options are endless. Whether you’re going solo or planning a group costume, there’s something for everyone.

Start with the classics by dressing as your favourite character and channel their most memorable moments. From Joey’s leather jacket to Phoebe’s boho guitar look, or Ross’s infamous leather trousers (just don’t forget the talc), you’ve got plenty to choose from.

  • The pink bunny (Halloween, Season 8)
  • The “in a box” look (Thanksgiving, Season 4)
  • Santa Claus (Christmas, Season 7)
  • College Chandler with the guitar tee and hair horns
  • Wearing all of Chandler’s clothes (“Could I be wearing any more clothes?”) (Season 3)
  • Dr. Drake Ramoray
  • Porsche guy (Season 6)
  • Vegas gladiator (Season 5)
  • Superman (Christmas, Season 7)
  • Ichiban lipstick for men (Season 10)
  • World War I uniform (Season 7)
  • Catwoman (Halloween, Season 8)
  • Turkey head, bonus points for the fez hat and sunglasses! (Thanksgiving, Season 5)
  • Ping pong paddle and frizzy Barbados hair (Season 9)
  • 1950s diner uniform (Season 2)
  • Red school prom dress (Prom video, Season 2)
  • Supergirl (Halloween, Season 8)
  • Boho queen with a guitar
  • Pregnant with triplets (a great bump costume!) (Season 5)
  • Bright orange furry coat (Season 5)
  • Yellow maxi dress with giant Christmas bow hiding a stain (Season 3)
  • Pink 60s dress (Season 2)
  • Cheerleader (Season 4)
  • Princess Leia (Season 3)
  • Pink Bo Peep-esque bridesmaid dress (Season 2)
  • Central Perk waitress
  • Blue school prom dress (Prom video, Season 2)
  • Red jumper and two name tags
  • Holiday Armadillo (Christmas, Season 7)
  • Frankie Says Relax t shirt (Season 3)
  • Leather trousers (Season 5)
  • Spud-Nik (Halloween, Season 8)
  • College Ross with curly hair and moustache

I have to admit that Rachel was my personal style icon. Her 90s fashion was everything: slip dresses, plaid skirts, denim overalls, and those effortlessly cool layered looks. Whether she was serving coffee at Central Perk or wearing Ralph Lauren, she always looked amazing. So, I thought she deserved her own little spotlight!  I came across a blog by AveWill, who absolutely nailed Rachel’s everyday looks. From casual chic to office glam, there’s loads of inspiration to pull from. I highly recommend checking out her post if you want to channel your inner Rachel Green.

Let’s start with the most iconic door in sitcom history. Monica’s purple door with the yellow peephole frame is a must have detail. Most people recreate it by decorating an internal door at home, but you could also get creative. Think cushions, table centrepieces, or even gift bags inspired by the colour scheme!

A lavender cushion with a yellow peephole frame makes a subtle but instantly recognisable nod to Monica’s apartment. Or stack purple and yellow gift boxes for a themed display that doubles as décor and party favours. You could even use mini yellow frames as table settings or photo props. However you do it, a little purple and gold goes a long way.

Take a look at how to create a purple and yellow Friends gift display here with this Monica’s door inspired “crap bag” gift, it’s a fun and easy way to tie the theme together.

And if you’re looking to take things beyond the gift table, let’s talk about how you can bring Monica’s iconic door colours into your overall room décor without needing a full apartment makeover!

Now, I’m not saying you need to install a custom ceiling light fixture like the one at Aqua Blue Kitchen in New Jersey (although wow. what a statement!) Their dining room light actually resembles Monica’s apartment door. I had to include it here, not as a realistic suggestion, but as a little spark for your imagination.

Feeling crafty? Try framing your party quotes or signs in mini yellow peephole style frames for a fun nod to Monica’s door. If you’re up for a DIY moment, create a photo frame like one of my favourites by It’s Renee, the end result is seriously impressive.

Perfect for a hen party, engagement celebration, or wedding event.

Need some visual inspiration? Take a look at this creative Best Friends themed party slideshow styled by Wanderlissa. It’s full of clever styling ideas, themed props, and playful touches.

  • Oversized coffee mugs with a “Reserved” sign
  • Phoebe’s guitar
  • Dinosaur bones or fossils (Ross would be proud)
  • A chick and a duck plushie duo
  • Central Perk menu board
  • Ross’s sandwich (with a note!)
  • Peephole frames in yellow
  • Hugsy the bedtime penguin
  • A toy taxi cab
  • The Holiday Armadillo costume
  • Joey’s “man bag”
  • A copy of Be Your Own Windkeeper
  • A turkey with sunglasses and a fez
  • Marcel the monkey (with a remote control!)
  • A laminated “celebrity freebies” list
  • A poker set for a game night moment
  • Boarding passes to London, Paris or Vegas
  • Giant poking device made out of chopsticks
  • The Magna Doodle from Joey and Chandler’s door
  • Monica’s vintage cookie time clock
  • A Magic 8 Ball
  • A director’s clapperboard
  • A Big Brown Bag from Bloomingdale’s
  • A faux wedding chapel sign (Vegas-style)
  • Opening credit umbrellas
  • A “Science Boy” comic
  • A TV Guide addressed to “Miss Chanandler Bong”
  • A bottle of lotion (for those leather trousers emergencies)
  • A toy ship in the bathtub (with Enya playing in the background, of course)
  • Pat the Dog
  • Lobsters (because soulmates, obviously)
  • Richard’s moustaches (displayed in a little jar, perhaps?)
  • Holiday candy basket
  • Birthday crown
  • New York memorabilia (subway signs, skyline cut-outs, etc.)
  • The Shining book hidden in the freezer
  • Gladiator helmet

You don’t need to use them all, just a few well placed props can instantly bring the theme to life and give your guests plenty of “Oh my God!” moments.

Want to see how props can truly transform a space? Here are two standout examples that show just how far a little creativity (and a lot of Friends love) can go:

Take a look at Dawn and Ian’s Friends inspired wedding. I absolutely love how this couple incorporated themed props from the show to decorate their celebration. Accessories relating to each character were cleverly displayed to create amazing table centrepieces. One of my favourite touches? A Central Perk-style menu board used in place of a traditional wedding breakfast seating plan. It’s totally on theme.

If you’re feeling a little quirky, why not channel your inner Phoebe Buffay and decorate your party with nothing but cups and ice? It’s out there, it’s unexpected, and it’s exactly the kind of thing Phoebe did!

Here are a few fabulously Phoebe ways to bring this theme to life:

  • Cup garlands strung across the ceiling like bunting
  • Cup towers that may or may not be structurally sound (but hey, it’s about the vibe)
  • Cup hats and necklaces – because accessories should always be made from party supplies
  • Cup chandeliers (yes, really) for a bit of DIY drama
  • Cup bouquets in vases as table centrepieces – eco chic meets coffee shop chaos
  • Ice buckets with crushed, cubed, and dry ice for that theatrical fog effect
  • Snow cones or frozen cocktails served in mismatched cups for that “found it in Monica’s cupboard” look
  • Cup themed party games, like “Stack the Cup,” “Guess the Ice Cube,” or “Pin the Lid on the Latte”
  • Cup confetti (cut up paper cups, obviously) scattered across tables
  • A ‘Cup and Ice Only’ zone – because Phoebe would definitely have a designated area for her artistic vision

It’s a low cost, high impact way to decorate, and it’s guaranteed to get your guests talking.

Every great party needs a standout moment with a space that grabs attention, gets people talking, and looks amazing in photos. Whether it’s a dessert table, a photo booth, or a themed backdrop, your focus point is where the magic happens.

You don’t need to go overboard, just choose one area to style really well. It could be the first thing guests see when they walk in, or the spot where everyone gathers for cake and selfies. Here are two of my favourite ways to create a Friends themed focal point:

You can have your cake and eat it too, literally. A dessert table is a brilliant way to combine food and décor in one delicious display. Even a simple cake can look amazing when styled with a few themed touches.

Think:

  • A Central Perk inspired cake or cupcakes
  • Cookies shaped like lobsters, coffee mugs, or turkeys
  • Cake pops with quotes or character faces
  • Macarons in purple and yellow
  • Popcorn in mini “Reserved” coffee cups
  • A backdrop with quotes or a peephole frame

If you love colour and fun, take inspiration from Melixa at Dias de Fiesta, who created a bold and playful Friends themed dessert table. She used bright primary colours and fun props like Phoebe’s guitar, turkey hat and glasses, and clapper board to bring the show’s energy to life. The iconic Friends font appeared on framed prints and even on the umbrellas themselves. A large Friends logo took centre stage on a black tablecloth, with a purple backdrop and red, yellow, and blue umbrellas tying everything together in a way that was vibrant, nostalgic, and full of personality.

Prefer something a little more refined? Event planner Flávia Ribeiro styled an elegant dessert table using muted tones and soft florals. While the colour palette had nothing to do with the show, it created a beautiful, romantic atmosphere. Subtle nods to Friends were tucked among the florals, like mini Central Perk signs, themed prints, and even Central Perk coffee cups. The centrepiece was a stunning four-tier cake topped with a sofa shaped icing sculpture.

  • Friends themed dessert table

Another elegant example comes from Ashton Events, who styled a Friends themed graduation garden party. Their set up featured muted furniture tones, a soft lavender tablecloth, and rustic plant inspired party favours. The overall palette was mostly black and white, with gentle pops of lavender and yellow to pay homage to Monica’s apartment door. A single peephole frame and a few signs were all it took to give the party that subtle Friends vibe.

Set up a faux fountain backdrop using a printed sheet or blue fabric with fairy lights for water. Place a vintage style orange sofa (or any comfy couch) in front, and hand out red, yellow, and blue umbrellas for guests to pose with, just like the opening credits.

Create a mini Central Perk corner with a stool, a mic stand, and a guitar. Add a “Central Perk” sign above and a brick wall backdrop. Bonus points for a “Smelly Cat” lyric board or a tip jar labelled “For Phoebe.”

Hang a collection of empty yellow frames (in different sizes) against a purple backdrop. Guests can pose behind them like portraits. Add a few quote signs or props like a turkey hat or Hugsy to complete the look.

Hang three white dresses on a rack or mannequins, with a sign that says “The One with All the Wedding Dresses.” Add a few beer bottles and a couch for guests to sit on and recreate the scene.

Staying with the wedding theme, set up a mini “wedding chapel” corner with a faux neon sign, a bouquet, and a veil. Add a cardboard cutout of Elvis or Joey in a gladiator helmet for extra laughs.

Recreate the trivia game scene with a scoreboard, paddles, and signs that say “Miss Chanandler Bong” and “Transponster.” Guests can pose as if they’re mid competition.

Use a printed or DIY New York City skyline as your backdrop. Add fairy lights or a “Central Perk” neon sign to give it that city at night vibe. Perfect for a stylish and simple nod to the show’s setting.

Recreate the prom flashback scene with a banner that says “Class of 1988,” a mirror for Monica’s reflection moment, and maybe even a tuxedo jacket and corsage.

Keep it sleek and simple with a plain black backdrop and the Friends logo in the iconic font. Add pops of colour with red, yellow, and blue props, or keep it monochrome for a twist.

Here are some fun Friends themed cocktail name ideas to inspire your drinks menu:

  • The Ross: Dino Daiquiri – A classic daiquiri with a prehistoric twist
  • The Phoebe: Flower Power Mojito – A floral, minty mojito with edible flowers
  • The Rachel: Closure Cosmo – A sleek cosmopolitan with a sugared rim
  • The Chandler: Sarcastic Sour – A dry, witty whiskey sour
  • The Monica: Neat Freak Fizz – A crisp gin and tonic with cucumber
  • The Joey: The Meatball Martini – A rich espresso martini (no actual meatballs, promise)
  • The Janice: Oh. My. Gawd. – A bright pink raspberry fizz with a splash of Prosecco
  • The Central Perk-tini – An espresso martini served in an oversized mug
  • The Lobster Love – A sweet pink cocktail for soulmates
  • The Pivot Punch – A fruity party punch with a kick

  • Ross’s Fajitas
  • Joey’s Meatball Subs
  • Joey’s Sandwiches
  • Ross’s Holiday Armadillo (shaped snacks or themed platter)
  • Monica’s Dirty Salad
  • Monica’s Mockolate (chocolate treats)
  • Ross’s Spud-Nik Salad (potato salad)
  • Ross’s Basket of Mini Muffins
  • Monica’s Dozen Lasagnes
  • Rachel’s English Trifle (the non-beef version, unless you’re feeling brave!)
  • Monica’s Little Drops of Heaven (sweets or mini desserts)
  • Phoebe’s Grandma’s Cookies (Nestlé Toulouse chocolate chip cookies)
  • Phoebe’s Hummus
  • Chandler’s Mac and Cheese
  • Chandler’s Stolen Cheesecake
  • Joey’s Special (two pizzas, of course)
  • Monica’s Fingernail Quiche
  • Monica’s Holiday Candy

And of course, don’t forget the most famous sandwich of all…

A Thanksgiving leftover sandwich with a gravy soaked slice in the middle. Add a little note to the plate that says:

Knock knock.
Who’s there?
Ross Geller’s lunch.
Ross Geller’s lunch, who?
Ross Geller’s lunch – please don’t take me. OK?

Set the scene with a banner that says “The One with the Dinner Party” or “Joey Doesn’t Share Food!” and place it behind your buffet table. Add a chalkboard or printed menu styled like the Central Perk board, listing your food items with fun, themed names.

One of my favourite ideas? Create character zones on your buffet table! Divide the spread into sections inspired by each of the six main characters:

  • Joey’s Corner – Pizza, meatball subs, and sandwiches with a “Joey Doesn’t Share Food!” sign
  • Monica’s Kitchen – Neatly plated lasagne, quiche, and jam jars with mini chef hat props
  • Phoebe’s Picks – Hummus, nestle cookies, and anything vegan or quirky, with a guitar nearby
  • Ross’s Table – Moist Maker sandwich, Spud-Nik salad, and mini muffins with a toy dinosaur
  • Chandler’s Snacks – Mac and cheese, cheesecake, and sarcastic quote cards
  • Rachel’s Treats – Trifle (the good kind), fancy sweets, and a fashion forward cake topper

Corrina’s Top Tip: As a final touch, include a recipe card station. Print out recipe cards for your themed dishes and let guests take them home as a fun keepsake. You could title it “Recipes from Monica’s Kitchen” or “Straight from the Geller Family Cookbook.”

If you’re looking for background music that fits the theme, you’re in luck. Friends is packed with memorable music moments. From emotional slow dances to hilarious singalongs, here are 15 songs to include on your party playlist:

  1. The RembrandtsI’ll Be There For You (The original theme song – obviously a must!)
  2. Carpenters – Top Of The World S1 E7 (Joey, Monica and Phoebe sing during a blackout whilst Ross fights with a cat)
  3. The Tokens – The Lion Sleeps Tonight S1 E18 (The song played non stop by Ross’ monkey Marcel)
  4. Hootie & the Blowfish – I Go Blind S2 E5 (At the concert)
  5. U2 – With or Without You S2 E7 (Rachel and Ross kiss at the coffee shop)
  6. Eric Carmen – All By Myself S2 E17 (Chandler and Joey in their apartments missing each other)
  7. Nelly – Ride With Me S5 E22 (The policeman stops Rachel)
  8. Donna Summer – Love to Love You Baby S5 E23 (Rachel dances naked)
  9. Elvis Presley – Viva Las Vegas S5 E23 (Chandler and Monica see Rachel and Ross coming out of a Vegas chapel, married!)
  10. Loreta – Trouble With Boys S6 E10 (Monica and Ross perform ‘The Routine’)
  11. Eric Clapton – Wonderful Tonight S6 E25 (Chandler and Monica dance after their engagement)
  12. Semisonic – Closing Time S8 E5 (The song plays at the end of the series when Rachel walks into the coffee shop)
  13. The Police – Roxanne S8 E10 (Phoebe sings a very altered version to Ross)
  14. Sir Mix-a-Lot – Baby Got Back S9 E7 (Rachel and Ross sing to Emma to make her laugh)
  15. Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just Wanna Have Fun S10 (Montage of Phoebe, Monica and Rachel’s moments together)

Want to take things up a notch? Set up a Phoebe Karaoke corner! Print out her lyrics, set up a mic, and let your guests channel their inner Buffay. Click here for an in depth list of her songs from the show. Besides Smelly Cat, here are three of my personal favourites:

Not sure your guests will sing? Set the scene instead by placing an acoustic guitar with a handwritten sign that says “Back in 5 Minutes” as a nod to Phoebe’s Central Perk gigs. You can also play a video compilation of her songs in the background for a fun, low pressure vibe.

  • A troll doll
  • A 2×4 block of wood
  • An old tin can
  • A label maker for past winners
  • Watered-down acrylic paint to give it that “rescued from the lake” look

Cups was a game Chandler invented so Joey could “win” money without knowing he was being helped. The rules? Completely made up. But that’s the fun of it!

Teach your guests how to play the Cups game using this guide, or make up your own version where every move is a win, until it’s not.

Recreate the iconic poker episode where the girls take on the guys. Set up a poker table and let your guests try their luck. Add a few casino style games like blackjack or roulette as a nod to the Vegas episodes.

Corrina’s Top Tip: Don’t throw away two Jacks just because they look unhappy.

Inspired by the Queen of Theme Party Games blog, this one’s perfect for birthdays or casual parties (maybe not weddings!).

  • Put on all of Chandler’s clothes
  • Walk down the aisle
  • Make a poking device out of chopsticks
  • Pivot the couch
  • Line up stuffed animals in size order (chick, duck, Pat the Dog, Marcel, Hugsy, Smelly Cat, lobster, Eddie’s goldfish)
  • Write down all 50 states in 3 minutes
  • Crawl like a lobster
  • Drink a gallon of milk in 10 seconds (or try!)
  • Make Ross’s sandwich
  • Identify the Nestlé Toll House cookie
  • Play catch (don’t be the dropper!)
  • Race wind-up toys
  • Put nappies on triplet dolls
  • Draw on a Magna Doodle
  • Don’t spill the coffee (egg-and-spoon style)
  • Do the Holiday Armadillo Shuffle (silly dance while wearing a tail or mask)
  • Sweep confetti into a square with Monica’s cleaning broom
  • Do your best Janice impression – “Oh. My. Gawd.”
  • Grab the correct five celebrities from Ross’s laminated freebie list
  • Toss beanbags into a trifle bowl

Corrina’s Top Tip: Keep a camera handy as these games make for the best candid photos and hilarious memories!

  • Carol (Ross’s ex-wife)
  • Sandy (the male nanny)
  • Dr. Richard Burke
  • Janice
  • Gunther
  • Fun Bobby

Need inspiration? Scroll back to the Friends Name Tag Ideas section at the top of this post.

Foosball was a staple in Joey and Chandler’s apartment, used for everything from settling bets to losing poultry. Set up a foosball tournament or use a tabletop version as part of your décor.

No foosball table? Channel the Barbados episode and set up a table tennis match instead!

Everyone loves a good party favour. And what better way to end your Friends themed celebration than with a little something that says, “I’ll be there for you (and your sweet tooth)”?

Yes, they were mentioned in the food section, but they deserve a second spotlight here. Not only are they delicious, but they also make adorable take home treats.

Wrap the cookies in brown paper bags, seal them with a Central Perk logo sticker, and pop in a copy of Phoebe’s Grandma’s secret recipe with a little thank you note. Sweet, simple, and totally on theme.

I’ve written a whole post on how to create your very own Crap Bag full of Friends themed goodies (don’t worry, it’s much shorter than this one!) I made one for my partners birthday because he’s slightly obsessed with the show. You can read it to steal some ideas.

Here are some budget-friendly filler ideas for your Crap Bag:

  • “We were on a break” Kit Kat
  • Lottery ticket (like when the gang all pitched in)
  • Lobster keyring
  • Mini Magna Doodle (check your local pound shop!)
  • “I ❤️ NY” badge or mini T-shirt
  • Bar of Monica’s Mockolate
  • Faux massage voucher from “Phoebe Buffay, Licensed Massage Therapist”
  • Toblerone (for that airport moment)
  • Toy dinosaur figures
  • Teeth whitener (a nod to Ross’s glow-in-the-dark smile)
  • Coffee sachet
  • London Union Jack fridge magnet or hat
  • Sneeze muffin
  • Magic 8 Ball

You could:

  • Gift pre-personalised mugs with character names or quotes
  • Add a message like “The One Where [Name] Gets Married”
  • Set up a DIY mug station with Sharpies and stencils so guests can decorate their own

Who knew coffee mugs could be so versatile?
